An infinity pool with a transparent wall combines two of the most striking ideas in pool design: water that seems to run into the view, and a clear side that lets you see into the water itself. In Dubai’s villas, penthouses and hotels, it is one of the most requested statement features. It is also one of the most demanding to engineer. Two ideas that work together

The vanishing edge

In an infinity (or vanishing-edge) pool, water flows over one edge into a hidden catch basin and is pumped back. From the right viewpoint, the surface appears to continue into the sea, the skyline or the landscape. The edge has to be perfectly level, and the catch basin and pumps must be sized for the flow and for the water displaced by swimmers.

The transparent wall

A clear panel replaces part of the pool wall, so the water can be seen from a terrace, a lower floor, a corridor or the street. It can sit below the vanishing edge, along the side of the pool, or form the whole end wall of a rooftop pool.

Acrylic or glass?

Both are used for transparent pool walls, and the right choice depends on size, shape and how the panel is installed.

The structural questions

• Water pressure. Load on the panel increases with depth. Panel thickness is calculated from the water depth and the span, with a safety margin.
• Support and fixing. The panel sits in a recess or channel in the pool structure, set and sealed with materials designed for permanent water contact. The surrounding concrete must be accurate and stiff.
• Building structure. Rooftop and cantilevered pools add heavy loads to the building. A structural engineer must confirm the slab, beams and supports.
• Thermal movement. Acrylic expands and contracts with temperature, which matters under UAE sun. Fixing details allow for it.
• Access for installation. Large panels may need a crane and a planned route to the roof or garden.

Design tips for a better result

• Plan the view from both sides. What people see through the wall matters as much as the view from the pool.
• Light the water. Underwater lighting turns the transparent wall into a glowing feature at night.
• Think about privacy. A street-facing clear wall is dramatic but visible; position and landscaping can control that.
• Shade and heat. Rooftop pools in full sun warm up quickly in summer. A pool chiller keeps the water comfortable.
• Cleaning access. Both faces of the panel need cleaning, so make sure the outside is reachable.
