Choose a freshwater aquarium if you want a calm, planted display that is simpler to look after. Choose a saltwater aquarium if you want the colour and movement of marine fish and accept a more demanding system. Freshwater aquariums from Water Wonders start from AED 15,000, and saltwater aquariums from AED 20,000.

That is the short answer. The rest of this guide explains what really differs, so you can choose with your eyes open and brief a builder properly.

Heat tolerance in Dubai Better, with the right species Needs tighter temperature control

Freshwater aquariums

A freshwater tank can carry tetras, cichlids, gouramis, discus and many other species, with live plants, wood and rock arranged into a landscape. It is the more forgiving choice: water parameters have a wider safe range, equipment is simpler and routine care is lighter. It suits family homes, first-time owners and anyone who wants a calm, natural look. Read our guide to the best aquarium fish for Dubai homes for species that cope well with local conditions.

Saltwater aquariums

A saltwater (marine) aquarium recreates ocean water with a carefully mixed salt solution. The result is the colours and behaviour of clownfish, tangs, angelfish and wrasses, which is why saltwater tanks make such strong centrepieces in lobbies, dining rooms and private offices.

What we build, and what we do not recommend

Our saltwater aquariums are designed around marine fish, with aquascaping and artificial coral. We do not promote or recommend reef aquariums, meaning tanks built around live coral. Live coral needs very precise light, flow and water chemistry, and the medicines that suit fish often harm it. A fish-based design with carefully planned aquascaping gives you the colour with far less risk to the display.

Equipment and water quality

Both types need filtration, a stable temperature and good water circulation. Saltwater adds salinity control and usually a protein skimmer, which removes organic waste before it breaks down, plus more frequent testing. Evaporation in Dubai concentrates salt, so levels drift faster than in cooler places. Whichever you choose, temperature control matters, see aquarium chillers in the UAE for why.

Maintenance

Water changes are routine for both, and saltwater changes also involve mixing salt to the correct level first. Maintenance with Water Wonders is priced per visit and starts from AED 300.

  • Standard: interior and exterior cleaning, water parameter checks, filtration cleaning, fish health check, and inspection of filtration equipment, sealant and waterproofing, lighting and temperature.
  • Premium: everything in Standard, plus medication and fish food supply, equipment replacement where needed and replacement of fish losses.
  • Emergencies: our team is available 24/7, with call-outs from AED 400 depending on time and location.

More detail is on our maintenance page.

Cost

Freshwater aquariums start from AED 15,000 and saltwater from AED 20,000. We price residential and commercial projects on the same basis, so size, material (glass or acrylic) and specification decide the final figure. See the custom aquarium cost guide for what moves the price. Build time is roughly 20 to 120 days, depending on size and material.

Fish and aquascaping

We choose the fish and design the aquascape together with you, based on your preferences and requirements, so the aquarium looks harmonious and the fish have a safe, healthy habitat.

Which should you choose?

  • You want a calm, natural, easy-care display: freshwater.
  • You want colourful marine fish and accept more upkeep: saltwater, designed around fish.
  • You travel often or want minimal involvement: either, with a maintenance plan and good automation.
  • You need a feature for a lobby or dining room: both work. Saltwater often gives the bolder look, and freshwater the calmer one.

Frequently asked questions

Is a saltwater aquarium harder to maintain than a freshwater one?

Generally yes. Water testing is more frequent and equipment needs closer attention. A professional design and a maintenance plan close much of the gap.

Which costs more, saltwater or freshwater?

Saltwater aquariums start higher, from AED 20,000 compared with AED 15,000 for freshwater. The final price depends on size, material and specification.

Do you build reef aquariums with live coral?

No. We do not promote or recommend reef aquariums. Our saltwater aquariums are designed around fish, with aquascaping and artificial coral.

Can a beginner keep a saltwater aquarium?

Yes, with a well-planned system and ongoing maintenance support. A freshwater tank is the easier starting point.

Which is better for a hot climate like Dubai?

Both need a stable temperature. Freshwater is more tolerant, and saltwater needs tighter control, so a correctly sized chiller is part of the design.
