A small garden is not a reason to give up on a pool. In Dubai the question is usually not “is there room?” but “what kind of pool fits the room, the structure and the heat?” These are the layouts that work best, and the checks that come before any of them.

Plunge pool in a courtyard

A plunge pool is built for sitting, cooling off and floating, not for lengths. That is why it fits a townhouse courtyard that could never take a swimming pool. Raised pool against a boundary wall

When digging is difficult, an above-ground or semi in-ground pool next to a wall avoids most groundwork. Lift the pool, add a bench on the wall side and it reads as a built-in feature instead of an add-on.

Terrace and rooftop pools

An unused terrace can become the best part of the home. Weight is the whole question: the structure must carry the full pool, and a lightweight modular shell leaves more of that capacity for the water. A survey by an engineer comes first, and so does the route for lifting the pool in.

A pool with one clear wall

A transparent acrylic or glass panel makes a small pool look larger, because the eye travels through the water to whatever is behind it. It works best where there is something worth looking at from the other side, such as a lower garden, a lounge or a staircase. A small, chilled pool for recovery is a sensible use of a limited space. The chiller is not optional here, because uncooled water in a Dubai summer will never be cold.

Make a compact pool feel bigger

• Line the pool up with a view or a doorway instead of pushing it into a corner.
• Use one clear wall or an underwater light to carry the eye further.
• Keep the plant room accessible. A hidden pump and chiller that nobody can reach become a problem in year two.
• Shade part of the water. It lowers the cooling load and makes the pool usable at midday.
