A good waterfall looks as if it were always there. A bad one looks like a pile of rocks with a hose. The difference is almost never the rock: it is the plumbing and the proportions that you do not see.

Start with the flow

A waterfall is a pump pushing water to the top of a structure, from where it falls back to a pool. The width of the weir lip decides the sheet of water, the fall height decides the sound, and the pump must deliver enough flow to keep the sheet unbroken. Too little flow makes a trickle; too much splashes out of the basin.

Natural rock, artificial rock or a clean spillway

Natural rock

Convincing and varied, but heavy, hard to place precisely and expensive to move.

Artificial rock

Shaped to a design, lighter and able to hide pumps and pipework. Compare them in artificial rock vs natural stone.

Spillway

A smooth edge in stone, steel or glass gives a crisp sheet of water in a modern garden. It relies on a perfectly level lip.

Controlling splash and wind

Wind can carry water out of the basin, and a feature that loses water needs constant top-up. Keep the fall height proportionate to the exposure, make the receiving pool wide enough and shield the feature from the prevailing wind if possible.

Evaporation and heat

In Dubai a moving feature loses water fast, and warm water grows algae. Include automatic top-up, filtration and, where the feature includes fish, shade and cooling.

Pumps, filtration and noise

Pumps should be sized for the head and flow, with some margin, and placed where they can be serviced. Filtration protects the pump and keeps the water clear.

Fitting a waterfall into a koi pond

Waterfalls oxygenate a pond, but the flow must be right for the fish. See koi pond design ideas.

Prices for custom features start from AED 15,000, see water feature cost. Our custom water features page has more, and you can request a design.

FAQ

How loud is a waterfall?

The fall height, the surface it lands on and the flow decide the sound. A wide, low sheet is quieter than a tall, narrow one.

Does a waterfall need a lot of water?

It recirculates the same water, but evaporation and splash in Dubai heat mean it needs topping up, ideally automatically.
