A koi pond is a design decision as much as a piece of engineering. These are the styles that work well on Dubai villa plots, and what each one asks of the site and the fish.
Modern geometric
Sharp rectangles, L shapes and clean stone or rendered walls suit contemporary architecture. The water surface does the decorative work, so the pond stays calm and reflective. Filtration is hidden in a plant room, which also means no pipework spoils the line of the garden. Because the edges are exposed, the finish and the waterproofing have to be perfect.
Japanese-style
Naturalistic rock edges, gravel, lanterns and planting frame the koi as living art. The pond looks irregular, but the engineering behind it is as exact as for a modern one. A gentle waterfall helps circulation and oxygen. This style works best with some shade, which is kind to the fish in summer and makes the garden feel cooler too.

Raised ponds
A raised pond lifts the water towards eye level, so you see the fish properly and need not dig deep. The edge doubles as seating. An acrylic or glass viewing panel on one side turns the pond into a window onto the water. The principles behind such panels are the same as for pools; see our clear panel service.
Waterfalls and rockwork
Moving water adds sound and oxygen. Real rock is heavy and hard to place, whereas artificial rock can be shaped to the design and conceal equipment, which we cover in fake rock covers. The waterfall should never be bigger than the pump and filtration can serve.
Designing for Dubai heat
- Depth. More water volume is more stable water.
- Shade. A pergola, a tree or a wall that shades part of the surface.
- Circulation. Moving water holds more oxygen.
- Cooling. Where needed, a chiller sized to the pond.

Choosing a style
Start with the architecture and the way you use the garden. Modern houses usually want modern ponds; mature, planted gardens suit the Japanese approach; compact courtyards are the natural home of the raised pond. Then decide how much of the pond you want to look into, as that determines whether a viewing panel belongs in the design.
FAQ
What does a koi pond cost?
Our ponds start from AED 25,000 and the price follows the size, design, location and features. See the koi pond cost guide.
Can I put koi in a small courtyard pond?
Yes, but koi need volume and filtration, so keep the number of fish proportionate to the water.
Do I need a waterfall?
No, but moving water helps circulation and looks good, so it is a common choice.
