For waterfalls, ponds and pool surrounds, natural stone and artificial rock can both look convincing. The difference shows up in weight, in how much of the design you can control, and in the years afterwards. Here is how they compare in practice.

Appearance

Natural stone has the real variety of colour and grain, which is difficult to fake. Good artificial rock is cast and finished from real moulds and coloured by hand, and can match local stone closely enough that the difference is not noticeable once it has weathered a little. Poorly made artificial rock looks flat and repetitive, so the quality of the finish is the thing to inspect.

Weight and structure

Real boulders are very heavy. Placing them needs cranes and strong foundations, and on terraces, podiums and roofs it may simply be impossible. Artificial rock is hollow or lightweight, so the same visual mass places less load on the structure and is far easier to install.

Shape and control

With natural stone, you take the shape that quarry gives you. Artificial rock can be made to fit the design: a particular cascade, a rock face around a pond, a cover over a manhole. It can also hide pumps, pipework and skimmers, which is what our fake rock covers are for.

Water, sun and heat

Both materials live with sun and spray in the UAE. Natural stone can crack or stain over time and has a mineral content that may affect water. Artificial rock needs UV-stable colouring and a sealed finish. Whatever you choose, ask what the finish is and how it is repaired.

Cost

Natural stone costs more to supply, transport and place. Artificial rock costs less to place and install, though the price depends on size and finish. We give a project-specific quotation, with water features starting from AED 15,000.

Which to choose

  • A heavy, permanent garden feature on the ground: either can work, and you can decide on the look.
  • A terrace, roof or tight access: artificial rock.
  • Something that has to hide equipment: artificial rock.
  • A site that needs the real thing for a design reason: natural stone, with the structure designed for it.

FAQ

Is artificial rock durable outdoors?

Yes, when it is made for it with a UV-stable finish. The finish is what to inspect.

Can I mix natural and artificial rock?

Often, with the artificial rock used where weight or shape matters most.
