An indoor koi pond brings a calm, living feature into a room, and it works in a villa courtyard, a winter garden or a commercial atrium. It is also a very different job from an outdoor pond: the water is inside the building envelope, so structure, moisture and safety all become part of the architecture.

Structure and waterproofing

Water is heavy, and koi need volume. Check what the slab can carry before the design is fixed, then waterproof the pond properly with a system that suits the build. A leak in an indoor pond damages finishes, so the waterproofing is detailed to be inspected and, if needed, repaired.

Humidity and ventilation

A large water surface adds moisture to the air. In an air-conditioned room that is usually manageable, but the room should be ventilated and finishes, joinery and electrical equipment nearby should be suitable for it. Lowering the water temperature reduces evaporation as well.

Filtration and plant

Indoor ponds still need the full chain: bottom drain, mechanical and biological filtration and, where appropriate, UV. The plant room must be reachable without crossing the living space. See koi pond filter systems.

Light

Koi do not need strong light, but a pond with none looks lifeless. Artificial lighting can be designed to show the fish and keep algae in check, with a day-night cycle that is kind to them.

Safety

  • Choose a pond depth and edge that suit the people who use the space, especially children.
  • Use non-slip surfaces around the edge.
  • Keep electrical equipment sealed and protected.

A viewing window

An acrylic or glass panel in the pond wall lets you watch the koi from the side. The panel is engineered for the water load, see our clear panel service.

Cost

Koi ponds start from AED 25,000, and an indoor pond with a clear viewing panel will be above the minimum. See the koi pond cost guide.
