All three can look excellent. They differ in what they need from you and from the room, and in how they age. The right one depends less on taste and more on light, who will look after it and what you want it to do.

Living wall

Real plants growing in a system with irrigation and drainage. It is the only one that grows, changes through the year and brings living foliage into a room. It needs enough light, a reliable water system and regular care, and plants are replaced when they fail. A well-kept living wall can last indefinitely because plants are replaced over time.

Moss (preserved) wall

Preserved moss and foliage that have been treated so they keep their look without growing. There is no irrigation and very little maintenance, but there is no growth either, and it should be kept out of direct sun and away from damp air. Preserved walls last for years rather than indefinitely, and the exact lifespan depends on the product and the room.

Artificial wall

Manufactured foliage on a panel. It needs the least care, tolerates any lighting and can be installed almost anywhere. Quality varies a great deal: good artificial foliage reads well at a distance, cheap foliage looks flat close up. It does not clean the air or change.

How to choose

  • Choose living if you want the real thing and the room has light, or can be fitted with it.
  • Choose moss for a low-care texture in a dry, shaded position.
  • Choose artificial where there is no light at all and no one will maintain it.
