The best plant for a living wall is the one that suits the light in the room. Most failures come from putting a plant that needs bright light in a corridor, or the reverse. In a UAE interior, air conditioning dries the air and light varies a lot, so choose by those two conditions first.

Start with the light

Measure it. A wall beside a large window and a wall in a windowless lobby need completely different plants, or lighting added to the design. If the room is dark, artificial grow lighting is part of the system, and the plant list changes with it.

Low light

Shade-tolerant foliage plants, such as ferns, philodendrons and pothos-type climbers, accept dim corners and still look full. They tolerate lower light, but they still need some, and some need supplementary lighting to stay compact.

Medium to bright light

Plants with colour and varied leaves, such as bromeliads and many tropical foliage species, do well where there is generous indirect light. They give the wall variety and a richer look.

Dry air from air conditioning

Continuous air conditioning dries leaf edges, so choose plants that cope and keep the irrigation reliable. Placement away from direct cold air from vents prevents damage.

Mixing plants

A balanced wall mixes plants with similar needs. Putting a thirsty plant next to a drought-tolerant one means one of them always suffers. We group plants by water and light.

What care they need

  • Regular trimming to keep the pattern.
  • Replacement of any plants that fail.
  • Checking the irrigation and drainage.
  • Fertiliser as needed.

Cost and design

FAQ

Can I have a green wall in a room with no windows?

Yes, with proper plant lighting built into the design.

Do plants on a living wall die often?

Not when they match the light and the irrigation works, and a regular service replaces any that fail.

See the green wall service or send us photos of your wall.
