Before you order a large aquarium, ask the question that matters more than shape or species: what will the floor carry? Water is heavy, and a tank concentrates the load in one place.

The quick arithmetic

A litre of water weighs about 1 kg. Add the tank, substrate, rock and stand, and the filled weight is noticeably more than the volume suggests. Rough figures:

So 500 litres of water weighs about 500 kg and 1,000 litres about 1,000 kg, before the tank itself, the stand, rock, substrate and decor. The full filled weight of your tank is calculated for each design, not read from a table.

Ground floor or upper floor

On a solid ground-floor slab most residential tanks are straightforward. On upper floors and in apartments, the question is not only the total weight but how the structure spreads it. A tank sitting along a supported wall is a different case from one in the middle of a span. This is also where acrylic helps: it weighs about half as much as glass, see acrylic vs glass aquariums.

Stands and load spreading

An engineered steel stand supports the tank and spreads the load over a wider area. For large or upper-floor tanks, that is part of the design, not an accessory. A flat, level base matters as well: an uneven floor puts uneven stress into the tank.

Towers and communities

Large installations in towers or managed communities may need building-management or structural approval. Ask your management early, as the process can take longer than the build. Our installation process allows for it at the survey stage.

When to call an engineer

  • The tank is large, or the floor is not on the ground.
  • The tank goes in the middle of a floor span.
  • You do not know the construction of the floor.
  • Your building management asks for a certificate.

FAQ

How heavy is a 1,000-litre aquarium?

The water alone is about a tonne, and the tank, stand and contents add to that, so it is a heavy, concentrated load.

Can an apartment take a large aquarium?

Often, with the load spread correctly and sometimes with an engineer’s check. It depends on the building.

If you are unsure whether your space can take the tank you want, ask us to survey it or read about our custom aquariums.
