Aquascaping is the design of the inside of an aquarium. Rock, wood, plants and substrate are arranged so the tank looks like a landscape instead of a container with fish in it. It is also where the fish’s home is decided, so it is as much biology as decoration.
Styles that work
Nature-style
Soft, asymmetrical layouts of rock and plants that echo hills, valleys or river banks. It is the most popular style for living rooms because it looks calm and is forgiving to maintain.
Rock and driftwood
Strong, sculptural arrangements built around a few large pieces. Good for fish that like caves and hiding places, and for darker, more dramatic rooms.
Densely planted
Lush plant growth in the foreground and background. It needs good light and regular trimming, but it improves water quality.

Designing for the fish first
We create the layout and interior of the aquarium to suit your taste and the species you want to keep, and prepare a safe habitat for them. Open swimming space, shelter and the right substrate are part of the design, not afterthoughts.
What the layout needs from the system
- Light. Plants need the right intensity and duration, and too much light feeds algae.
- Flow. Water must reach all parts of a dense scape so waste and nutrients do not collect.
- Substrate. It affects plant growth and the look, and should suit the fish.
- Temperature. A stable range supports both plants and fish. See our aquarium chiller guide for Dubai summers.
Keeping it looking good
A scape matures over weeks and months. Trimming, water changes and checking the equipment keep it balanced, and a maintenance plan stops the layout going wild. Our visits are described in the maintenance service.

Aquascaping as part of a custom aquarium
The best results come when the scape is designed along with the tank, rather than added to it. The viewing panel, cabinet, lighting and filtration are all planned around the layout. For examples of how a tank fits a room, see wall aquarium ideas and majlis aquarium design.
FAQ
Can I aquascape an existing aquarium?
Yes, although the lighting and flow may need adjusting to suit the new layout.
Do planted tanks need more care?
They need regular trimming and balanced light and nutrients, but they often keep the water cleaner than bare tanks.
For a tank built around a scape, see the custom aquarium service and send us your ideas.
