A custom aquarium is closer to a piece of building services than to a piece of furniture, and the process reflects that. Here is how a project runs with Water Wonders, from the first site visit to the day you can enjoy a stable, stocked tank. Timelines are real ranges, not promises: most builds take 20 to 120 days, and the spread comes almost entirely from size and material.
1. Survey and brief
We start with the space and the people who will live with the tank. We look at the wall or floor that will carry it, how equipment and the tank itself will reach the room, where water, drainage and power are, and where the filtration and cooling equipment can live. For a wall or divider aquarium this is the stage that decides whether the idea is feasible. You tell us what you want to keep: a calm freshwater scape, a marine display, a large predator.
2. Design and engineering
Drawings fix the shape, the cabinet, the viewing panels and the layout of the life-support system. The material is chosen here: acrylic or glass, and the thickness for the water height. If you are weighing the two, our guide to acrylic vs glass aquariums explains how we decide. Cooling is specified at this point as well, because in the UAE it is part of the design rather than an accessory.

3. Fabrication in our workshop
The tank, stand and life-support assembly are built in our own 8,000 sq ft facility in Al Qusais, Dubai. Building in-house is what allows curved panels, cylinders and room dividers, and it keeps design, fabrication and installation with one team. A small freshwater tank sits at the lower end of the 20 to 120 day range; a large acrylic tank in a specified finish sits at the upper end.
4. Delivery and installation
Large tanks are moved in sections or complete, depending on access. On site we position the tank, connect plumbing to the sump and filtration, install the chiller, lighting and controls, and check every joint before water goes in. Access and lifting are planned in advance rather than discovered on the day.

5. Cycling and stocking
The biological filter has to grow before fish go in. We fill the system, run it and bring the water chemistry to a stable point. Livestock is then added gradually, which avoids stress and early losses. Our aquascaping and fish selection follow your preferences and the species you want, and we prepare a safe habitat for them.
6. Handover and aftercare
We show you how the system works and what to check each day. From there you can look after it yourself or hand it to our aquarium maintenance team, which visits per call from AED 300. Our products carry a warranty; the period depends on the product and your agreement.
What affects how long it takes
- Size and complexity. Curved or multi-panel tanks take longer than a standard rectangular one.
- Material. Thick acrylic takes longer to fabricate and finish than glass.
- Site readiness. Walls, plumbing and power that are not ready will hold up installation.
- Decisions. Late changes to the cabinet or finish are the commonest cause of delay.
Common questions
How much does a custom aquarium cost?
Freshwater aquariums start from AED 15,000 and saltwater from AED 20,000. See the full cost guide.
Do I need other contractors?
Design, fabrication, installation and aftercare are handled by our own team, which gives you one point of responsibility. Where walls or joinery are part of the building works, we coordinate with your contractor.
Can the aquarium be built around my interior design?
Yes. For built-in and new-build projects we coordinate with your architect or interior designer, so the aquarium is designed into the room.
