Acrylic is a softer material than glass, so it can scratch. The good news is that it can also be repaired: fine marks are polished away and the surface returns to clear. The question is which kind of scratch you have.

Grade the scratch first

  • Fine surface marks. Hairline scratches that catch the light at an angle. These polish out.
  • Moderate scratches. You can feel them with a fingernail. They need wet sanding and polishing by someone experienced.
  • Deep gouges. They may affect more of the panel thickness. A specialist should assess these, and in rare cases the panel should be replaced.

How it is done

Removal follows a sequence: clean the surface, work through progressively finer abrasives, then polish with a compound until the clarity returns. Working on a filled tank is possible for outside surfaces; inside scratches may need the water level to be lowered. The job is slow because rushing it creates heat and distortion.

What not to do

  • Do not use a household abrasive or a scouring pad.
  • Do not use ammonia-based glass cleaners or solvents, which can craze acrylic.
  • Do not polish dry, or press hard on one spot.

Avoiding scratches

Most marks come from sand or grit trapped in a cleaning pad, from magnetic cleaners that pick up gravel, and from decor moving against the glass. Rinse tools in clean water, use pads made for acrylic and keep gravel and sharp rock away from the panel. Our acrylic vs glass guide explains why acrylic remains the better choice for many tanks despite this.

FAQ

Can all acrylic scratches be removed?

Fine and moderate marks usually can. Deep damage needs assessment.

Does polishing weaken the panel?

Very little material is removed in a normal polish. If there is deep damage, a specialist should check the remaining thickness.
