Most aquarium and koi pond losses in the UAE happen in a few hours, not over weeks. A tripped breaker, a failed pump or a chiller fault in July can take water temperature and oxygen to dangerous levels very quickly. Power cuts across the grid are rare here, but local failures inside a villa or building are not. This guide sets out a simple emergency plan you can prepare now, before the heat peaks.
Why summer emergencies are so serious
- Warm water holds less oxygen. As temperature rises, dissolved oxygen falls, just as fish need more of it.
- Circulation stops when power stops. Without pumps, the water stops moving, gas exchange at the surface drops and filter bacteria start to suffer.
- Heat builds fast. Indoor rooms without air conditioning and outdoor ponds in direct sun warm up quickly.
- Reefs are sensitive. Corals stress and bleach when temperatures climb above the range they are used to.
Priority one: oxygen
In almost every emergency, oxygen runs out before anything else. The first job is to get air into the water.
- Keep a battery-powered air pump with air stones for each aquarium and for the pond, tested and charged.
- Agitate the surface by hand or with a jug if nothing else is available. Movement at the surface is what exchanges gases.
- Stop feeding. Food raises oxygen demand and adds waste the filter cannot handle without power.

Priority two: temperature
- Aquariums: keep the room cool if you can. Sealed bottles of frozen water floated in the sump or tank lower temperature gradually. Never add ice directly, and change temperature slowly.
- Ponds: add shade over the water with cloth or temporary covers, and top up with dechlorinated water if levels fall. Avoid large, sudden water changes.
- Reefs: watch the thermometer closely. Small, controlled reductions are safer than big swings.
Prepare before summer: the checklist
- Know your circuits. Label which breaker feeds the aquarium or pond equipment, and make sure the RCD is not shared with appliances that trip often.
- Add backup power. A UPS on the main return or air pump, or a battery backup designed for aquariums, buys time during short outages.
- Install alarms. Temperature and power-failure alerts that message your phone mean you know within minutes, not hours.
- Service the chiller. Clean condenser fins and filters before the hottest months. Our aquarium chiller guide explains sizing and care, and pool chillers follow the same logic for larger volumes.
- Keep an emergency kit. Battery air pump, spare air line and stones, thermometer, water conditioner, a bucket and frozen bottles in the freezer.
- Write down the plan. Put it next to the tank so anyone at home, including staff, knows what to do.
- Plan for travel. If you are away in summer, arrange someone who can respond, and keep the maintenance company’s number with them.

Koi ponds: extra points
Koi are large, active fish with a high oxygen demand, and outdoor ponds take the full force of the sun. Depth, shade and constant circulation are the main defences, as explained in our summer koi pond care guide. Reduce feeding in the hottest weeks, and keep an air pump ready that can run from a battery or generator.
After the emergency
- Restore power to pumps first, then heaters or chillers.
- Test ammonia and nitrite over the next few days; filter bacteria may have been damaged.
- Feed lightly until the system is stable again.
- Remove any dead livestock quickly to protect water quality.
- Book a check-up if anything looks wrong. Our team is available 24/7 for emergencies, with call-outs starting from AED 400; see maintenance and care.
FAQ
How long can aquarium fish survive without power?
It depends on stocking, temperature and tank size. In a hot room, problems can start within a few hours, which is why an air pump and backup power are the first things to prepare.
Should I do a water change during a heatwave?
Only small, temperature-matched changes. Large or sudden changes can shock fish and corals more than the heat itself.
Is a UPS worth it for an aquarium?
Yes, for the pump that keeps water and air moving. It covers short outages and gives you time to respond to longer ones.
Who can I call in an emergency?
Water Wonders offers 24/7 emergency support, with call-outs from AED 400 depending on time and location.
