Moving an aquarium is not a matter of draining it and lifting it. A large tank is heavy, fragile and alive, and the fish, the bacteria in the filter and the structure all need to be looked after. Done well, a move is a planned project of a few stages.
Plan the move before the tank is touched
Start with the destination: floor strength, power, water, drainage and a clear route to the room. Measure doors, lifts and corridors against the tank and its stand. If the tank cannot pass in one piece, say so early, since the answer changes how we dismantle it. Our guide to floor loading shows what to check at the new location.
Looking after the fish
Fish are moved first and kept in temporary holding containers with aeration and stable temperature. The shorter the time out of the main tank, the lower the stress. In summer, protecting them from heat during transport is essential.

Draining and dismantling
The water is removed in a controlled way, and the equipment, substrate and decor are separated. Filter media should be kept wet, and where possible some of the original water is saved, because it helps the system settle again. Panels and joints are inspected on the way out.
Transport and reinstallation
The tank is protected and moved with the right equipment for its size. At the new site we position it level on the stand, check the seals, reconnect the filtration and cooling and fill the system slowly.

Starting the system again
After a move the biological filter may have lost bacteria, so the system needs checking, and the fish should return only when the water is stable. Cooling needs to be working before the fish go back in, particularly in summer.
Questions to ask a mover
- Who is responsible for the tank if something is damaged?
- How will the fish be held, and for how long?
- Will a seal check be done before refilling?
- Can they restart the filtration and cooling?
If you are relocating a tank, our team can look at it first. See the aquarium maintenance service or tell us about the move.
FAQ
Can fish be moved with the tank?
No. Fish are removed first and held in aerated containers with stable temperature, then returned when the water is stable.
How long does an aquarium move take?
It depends on the size, the access and the restart of the system. We plan it after a survey.
