Buying koi is the exciting part of owning a pond, and the part where most avoidable problems begin. A single sick fish can infect a whole pond, and koi that are too large or too many for the system will struggle in the UAE heat. This guide covers popular varieties, how to pick healthy fish, why quarantine matters and how to introduce new koi safely.

Variety Appearance
Kohaku White body with red markings, the classic koi
Taisho Sanke White body with red and black markings
Showa Black body with red and white markings
Ogon Single metallic colour, such as gold or platinum
Asagi Blue-grey net pattern on the back with red-orange sides
Chagoi Plain brown or olive; known for being calm and friendly
Butterfly koi Long, flowing fins in many colour patterns

Variety matters for looks, not for care: all koi need the same clean, well-oxygenated water.

How to choose healthy koi

  • Behaviour. Healthy koi swim actively with the group, feed eagerly and keep their fins open. Avoid fish that hang alone at the surface or sit on the bottom.
  • Body. Look for a smooth, even body shape without hollows, lumps or a bent spine.
  • Skin and scales. No ulcers, red streaks, raised scales, white spots or cloudy patches.
  • Fins. Clean, complete fins without frayed edges or red veins.
  • Gills. Even breathing; rapid gill movement can mean stress or parasites.
  • The whole tank. If several fish in the seller’s tank look unwell, do not buy from it, even a fish that looks fine.

Size and number: think about the pond, not the shop

Koi grow. A small fish today can reach a large adult size within a few years, and the pond has to support the adult fish, not the juveniles. Overstocking is one of the main causes of poor water and summer losses. Agree a realistic number with whoever designed the filtration; see our koi pond filtration guide for why stocking and filtration go together.

Quarantine: the step people skip

New koi should spend several weeks in a separate quarantine tank before joining the pond. During that time they are observed, fed and, if needed, treated, without risking the established fish. Quarantine is especially important for serious viral diseases such as koi herpesvirus, which can spread through a pond quickly.

  • Use a separate tank with its own filter and aeration.
  • Keep temperature stable and similar to the pond.
  • Use separate nets and equipment.
  • Watch closely for changes in behaviour, skin and appetite.

Introducing new koi to the pond

  1. Match temperature gradually by floating the bag or adjusting the quarantine water.
  2. Release the fish gently; avoid adding the seller’s or quarantine water to the pond.
  3. Feed lightly for the first days.
  4. Watch the whole pond for a few weeks for any signs of stress or disease.

Timing in the UAE

The cooler months are the best time to buy and introduce koi. Transport and handling in peak summer add stress when water temperatures are already high and oxygen is lower. If fish must be moved in summer, keep journeys short and make sure the pond’s cooling and aeration are working well; see our summer koi pond care guide.

FAQ

How long should new koi be quarantined?

Several weeks is a sensible minimum, with close observation throughout. Ask your pond specialist for a plan suited to your fish and setup.

How many koi can I keep in my pond?

It depends on volume, filtration and the adult size of the fish. Plan for adult koi and leave room for growth.

Can koi live with other fish?

Peaceful pond fish such as goldfish can share a koi pond, but every fish adds to the waste load, and the same quarantine rules apply.

When is the best time to buy koi in Dubai?

The cooler months, when water temperatures are lower and transport is less stressful.
